Part of the Natura 2000 site 'Vallée de la Haine downstream of Mons', the Hainin wood contains a mosaic of predominantly wet to marshy habitats: riverbank sedge beds (Carex riparia) and marsh sedge (Carex acutiformis), rush beds (Juncus effusus), networks of ditches, springs, etc. It is an important water distribution pumping site, which causes varying degrees of soil subsidence. The fauna, little known, includes several species of amphibians, as well as the bluethroat (Luscinia svecica) and a tiny protected snail, the Desmoulin's whorl snail (Vertigo moulinsiana).
