In the past, the castle and surrounding park in English landscape style were owned by the Van Ackere family. It was originally a private ornamental park and much smaller (up to the pavilions).
In 1954, the then municipal council purchased the park and made it public with a park supervisor. Thus, visitors were only allowed to walk on the paths, and children were assigned a limited play area. Later, a library was built in the park, a tennis court was established, and at the edge, a swimming pool and sports hall were added. The original character of the park disappeared.
