Anteriormente, el castillo y el parque circundante en estilo paisajístico inglés eran propiedad de la familia Van Ackere. Originalmente era un parque decorativo privado y mucho más pequeño (hasta los pabellones).
En 1954, el entonces gobierno municipal compró el parque y se abrió al público con un supervisor de parque. Así, los visitantes solo podían caminar por los senderos y a los niños se les asignó un espacio de juego limitado. Posteriormente, se construyó una biblioteca en el parque, se habilitó una cancha de tenis y en los alrededores se añadieron una piscina y un polideportivo. El carácter original del parque desapareció.
