Koningshooikt, part of Lier, where bus builder Van Hool once started as a bicycle repair shop on what is now a world-famous bus company. 3500 employees build buses and industrial vehicles there every day.
The three municipalities (Walem, Koningshooikt, Lier) also have a fort, which is part of the outer fortification belt around Antwerp, built between 1877 and 1905. The fort of Walem is a protected nature reserve where large colonies of bats have found shelter for years. Other forts were operated in the seventies as a tavern with playground or as a fishing pit.
