A domain of the de Ghellinck family was purchased by the Nature and Forest Agency (2018) to eventually create a public green space. During World War II, there was an ammunition depot here, but it was blown up in September 1944, and a lot of ammunition is believed to still be in the forest. Since 1964, research on great tits has been conducted here by Ghent University, and a colony of red bats also finds its way here. Larger wildlife such as foxes and roe deer have also been spotted from time to time.
