The banks of the canal are often made of stone or concrete, so there is little greenery to be found in the immediate vicinity of the canal. An original solution is to place floating green islands where they do not hinder navigation or to attach vegetated gabions to the shores where semi-aquatic plants (yellow iris, etc.) can develop. These new ecosystems attract water birds, but also many species of fish, such as pike or bream, which can spawn there.
