The Tiensestraat is a street in the center of Leuven that connects the centrally located Rector De Somerplein with the Leuven ring road. The street changes there at the Tiensepoort into the Tiensesteenweg. Since 1 June 2013, the part of the street most towards the center has been completely pedestrianized until the intersection with the Bériotstraat, which resulted in a large increase in catering establishments. In this way, the street becomes a competitor for the Muntstraat, which is known as THE restaurant-state of Leuven.
The First World War destroyed some of the buildings along the street, especially in the oldest part of the center, after which rebuilding followed with reconstruction architecture.
