This café has been around since around 1870 and was then called 'De Goude Leeuw'. The current name 'De Vlaamse Leeuw' was created in 1910. (Source: J. De Brouwer). The first owner of the café was a certain Christiaan Van Ginderdeuren. At that time, the café was a tavern (for horses) and an inn. Christiaan's grandson, Philemon Van Ginderdeuren, expanded the business and in 1919 Louis Couck and his wife took over the café. In 1933 the business was left to Odile Couck and Jerome Van Daele. In 1956 the café was sold to the Atlas brewery.
