The picturesque town of Stavelot is nestled deep in the wooded Amblève valley.
Stavelot owes its origins to Saint Remaclus, who founded a Benedictine monastery there in 648. The abbey gradually grew into a center of religious and secular power. Until 1795, when it was dissolved, it governed completely independently, just like the Prince-Bishopric of Liège.
The abbey was dissolved under French rule. The impressive monastery buildings now house the town hall and several museums. The city was severely affected during World War II. Nevertheless, some streets still feature beautiful half-timbered houses.
Address: Stavelot, Luik, Belgium
