The Stift Fröndenberg in Fröndenberg was founded by the Archbishop of Cologne Heinrich von Molenark between 1225 and 1230 as a Cistercian convent. At the end of the 16th century, it was transformed into a ladies' convent. The collegiate church serves today as a Protestant parish church.
Otto von Altena financed the foundation. The Cistercian nuns came from Hoven, now Zülpich. Besides the Virgin Mary, Saint Mauritius was the patron saint. Otto's sister Richardis became the first abbess, as documents from the years 1257 to 1270 attest. Between 1262 and 1391, the collegiate church served as the burial place of the Counts of the Mark.
