The mill was first mentioned in a document by Duke Albrecht the Fat in 1305. In this document, the duke granted the city the right to operate a mill. At that time, the mill was owned by the lords of Adelebsen. In 1371, it was purchased by the city of Göttingen.
The mill is located on the Leine Canal and was outside the old city fortifications. It was not until the construction of the ramparts that, starting in 1541, it was included in the city's fortification system, thus helping to secure the supply of the population during wartime. The mill was continuously leased by the city of Göttingen. In the 14th century, the annual rent was about 18 Marks.
