Il mulino fu menzionato per la prima volta in un documento del 1305 dal Duca Alberto il Grasso. In quel documento il duca conferì alla città il diritto di macinazione. A quel tempo, il mulino era di proprietà dei signori di Adelebsen. Nel 1371 fu acquistato dalla città di Göttingen.
Il mulino si trova sul canale della Leine ed era situato al di fuori delle antiche mura difensive. Solo con la costruzione della fortificazione delle mura, dal 1541, fu integrato nelle strutture difensive della città, potendo così garantire l'approvvigionamento della popolazione in tempi di guerra. Il mulino è stato costantemente affittato dalla città di Göttingen. Nel XIV secolo, l'affitto annuale ammontava a circa 18 marchi.
