De molen werd in 1305 voor het eerst officieel vermeld in een schrijven van hertog Albrecht de Vetste. In het schrijven verleende de hertog de stad het recht op maalrecht. Op dat moment was de molen in het bezit van de heren van Adelebsen. In 1371 werd ze door de stad Göttingen aangekocht.
De molen bevindt zich aan het Leinekanaal en lag buiten de oude stadsmuur. Pas door de bouw van de wallen na 1541 werd ze geïntegreerd in de stedelijke verdedigingswerken en kon zo de bevoorrading van de bevolking in oorlogstijden waarborgen. De molen werd voortdurend verpacht door de stad Göttingen. In de 14e eeuw bedroeg de jaarlijkse pacht ongeveer 18 mark.
