The pyramid is part of an overall complex consisting of the Garzau Castle and the associated landscape park. Friedrich Wilhelm Carl Count von Schmettau established the park in 1779; the pyramid was built in 1784 and was intended as a mausoleum for the count. However, he sold the estate in 1802. In 1911 Herrenhaus Garzau burnt down. While rebuilding the castle, the pyramid decayed. Because of the appearance the building was called the "Ritterburg". It was ebuilt it in the years 2000 to 2010. The interior is now largely in the original state.
