Criewen is a formerly independent municipality that has belonged to Schwedt/Oder since 1 August 2001. It is located near the Polish border, directly next to the Lower Oder Valley National Park. Criewen was first mentioned in a document in 1354 and is therefore one of the oldest documented Slavic fishing villages.
The Lenné Park Castle, built for cavalry captain Otto von Arnim, is now the seat of the Brandenburg Academy Schloss Criewen. From 2003, the German Foundation for the Protection of Monuments also participated in the restoration of the church.
