Criewen es una antigua comunidad independiente, que desde el 1 de agosto de 2001 pertenece a Schwedt/Oder. Se encuentra cerca de la frontera polaca, colindante directamente con el Parque Nacional del Bajo Valle del Óder. Criewen fue mencionado por primera vez en 1354 en documentos, siendo así una de las aldeas pesqueras eslavas más antiguas certificadas.
El castillo construido para el capitán Otto von Arnim en el parque Lenné es hoy la sede de la Academia de Brandeburgo Castillo Criewen. La restauración de la iglesia también fue parte del compromiso de la Fundación Alemana para la Protección de Monumentos desde 2003.
