The Waggon- und Maschinenbau AG Görlitz was a manufacturer of heavy machinery and railway vehicles. The company existed until 1946. In a tradition line, several companies have continued to carry the name WUMAG, some of which still do today. WUMAG looks back on a history of over 160 years and has shaped the economic landscape in Görlitz, and later in Krefeld, like hardly any other company. The history of WUMAG ranges from the initial coach-building workshop to an independent, nationwide operating large enterprise, to the present-day metal construction company WUMAG texroll.
On June 5, 1828, Johann Christoph Lüders founded a saddler and painter workshop in Görlitz on the Obermarkt. In addition to saddler and painting work, he also manufactured wagons of various types. Already a year later, in April 1829, his business moved to the obere Langengasse, where he now operated as a saddler and wagon builder. However, these premises soon became insufficient due to his growing reputation, prompting him to relocate to Demianiplatz. At that time, the city of Görlitz announced the construction of two eight-axle railway wagons for timber transport, as the city owned large forest areas in the Görlitzer Heide to the northeast. Lüders also participated in the tender along with master locksmith Conrad Schiedt. On October 19, 1849, the city council decided in favor of Lüders and Schiedt. This date is considered the birth of Görlitzer wagon construction. Conrad Schiedt provided the necessary iron material from his factory for iron and machinery goods in Büttnergasse and contributed to the construction of the timber transport wagons. In 1849, Lüders moved production to Brunnenstraße.
