Burgwenden is nestled between the mountain ranges of Monraburg, Wendenburg, and Finnberg at the southern exit of a pass through the Schmücke and Hohe Schrecke. The Hirschbach stream runs through the village.
The settlement of the landscape around Burgwenden is evidenced by numerous archaeological finds dating back to the Neolithic period, with concentrations of finds indicating settlements of the Linear Pottery culture.
At a strategically significant location, the Monraburg, one of the largest prehistoric hill forts on the northern edge of the Thuringian Basin, was built. To the northwest, it was supplemented in the early Middle Ages by the Wendenburg. Both fortifications secured the densely populated surroundings and also an ancient road that ran over the Finne Pass.
