Exquisite nature: Where the tables are turned

The south and west slopes in the Bevertal valley near Dalhausen may look barren, dry, and sunburned at first glance. However, the impression is deceptive - semi-dry grasslands on shell limestone are among the most species-rich communities in Central Europe. Characteristic are the numerous orchids, the yellow flowers of legumes, or the blue-violet flowers of daisies. The Mediterranean scent that hovers over the meadows comes from the numerous herbs, which are also used in the kitchen: thyme, wild marjoram, or wild garlic. The diverse range of flowers makes the meadows a paradise for butterflies. Especially the blue and violet flowers are particularly popular - and the many legumes are the preferred food for the caterpillars of blue butterflies. The calcareous grasslands near Dalhausen are a part of the "Exquisite Nature". In total, there are 18 such experience areas in the cultural landscape of Kreis Höxter. They all are components of the protected area system "Natura 2000" and thus belong to our European natural heritage.
