One of the busiest places in Granada is Plaça de les Pasiegas.
It is a trapezoidal square located between the Duomo doors and Bib Rambla Square and has been a meeting point since the beginning.
The Plaça de les Pasiegas was founded at the end of the 17th century when the colleges of San Miguel, dedicated to the education of Moorish children, and of Santa Catalina, dedicated to the preparatory studies for university and ecclesiastical careers. This new site became Named in honor of the Plaça de las Flores flower market located there.
In 1946 the square was paved with large stone slabs from the Sierra d'Elvira and the stairs were built.
There are two possible origins for the name Plaza de las Pasiegas , which originated in the early 19th century.
- According to some historians, the name is due to the fact that several women from the Pas region (Cantabria) set up their clothing shops there.
- According to other authors, the name refers to the nurses (also known as amas de cría or amas de leche), originally from the Cantabrian Valley, who mostly nursed the children of the bourgeoisie of Granada in the 19th century
