Surrounded by cafés, bars and restaurants, this lively square probably already served as a forum in Roman times and is still a must-see place in the city today. The square owes its current name to the church of Saint James, built in the 12th century but razed to the ground in the 16th century because of its proximity, which was considered dangerous for the newly built Citadel. At the time of the Christmas Markets, wooden chalets replace the usual terraces of the square and the aromas of mulled wine are diffused in the air.
