The Moyen Pont, originally called the "Moyen Pont des Morts", and the Pont des Morts located in its extension, owe their name to the origin of their construction: it was financed by the Saint-Nicolas hospital, which collected and sold the best clothes of each dead person in Metz.
The Middle Bridge was fortified, and we can still see, walking along the Moselle, the opening that allowed the gates to be lowered to block access to the city by the river.
