A medieval town on the doorstep of the D-Day landing beaches, Bayeux owes its worldwide reputation to its sumptuous cathedral and its famous UNESCO-listed Tapestry. Both celebrate the saga of William the Conqueror. Every first weekend in July, the Médiévales de Bayeux is the town's flagship event. Miraculously spared by the fighting in June 1944, Bayeux was the first town on the French mainland to be liberated and is home to the largest British cemetery in Normandy.
