Originally, the church was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Then, during enlargement and renovation work in the 14th century, it became a parish centre and took the patron saint, the Holy Bishop of Orléans, as its patron saint.
In the 5th century, Saint Aignan was one of the most illustrious pontiffs of the Gauls and the liberator of the city of Orléans.
The members of Saint Aignan's family, the "Aniani", settled in a distant city of the empire in Sabaria in Pannonia, a Roman province conquered by Augustus, which corresponds in our modern Europe to southern Hungary.
