In Square Place Churchill, a building misleads you about its function. The pediment reads "Palace of Justice" , but the enamelled plaque on the city's heritage trail tells you about the building's history: a Capuchin monastery .
Capuchin monks from Ireland settled in Charleville in 1620. On 12 January 1625, the Archbishop of Reims blessed and consecrated the church building. The original monastery was probably demolished in the 18th century and replaced by a second monastery, the construction of which began in 1782. During the Revolution, the monastery became a prison . This is still the function of the monastery today.
