Built in the 15th century and reinforced in the 18th century, the Gros Mur supports the platform on which the church and the square rest. It fulfills both a defensive function (rampart) and an urban planning function (support). Some sections of the wall of the enclosure, about 350 meters long, built in the 14th century, still exist. Eight of the nine fortified gates that served as tollbooths were destroyed during the Wars of Religion. Only the Lyon gate, under the Gros Mur, remains.
