This particular monument focuses on the victims of WWII (1939–1945) , unlike the larger Monument aux Morts on Place des Victoires which also commemorates WWI and later conflicts.
Menton was occupied by Italy in 1940 , and later by Germany. Its location near the Bastion, which itself once served as a defense point, reinforces the historical significance of this place as a border post and a site of battle and remembrance.
