The work was sculpted in 1698 by the sculptor Gioacchino Vitagliano after a design by Paolo Amato.
The name means 'abundant with water' and is derived from the Arabic 'gharraf'.
The marble structure consists of a basin containing a pyramid-shaped platform that culminates in the figure of the goddess of abundance surmounted by an eagle fighting a hydra.
Initially, the monumental fountain stood in front of the Genio del Garraffo at the Vucciria, in the square of the same name. In 1862 it was moved to Piazza Marina, where it can still be seen today.
