Description

The Wijde Aa north of Zwolle is a recreational lake that was created by sand extraction for the construction of the underlying residential area the Aa-landen. The name is derived from the river Aa, of which the Westerveldse Aa is the only remaining piece of open water. Originally the lake was smaller, and was known as De Kolk van Helderlicht, named after the farm of the same name that stands next to the lake (now creative center Inside Out). The farm Helderlicht is already mentioned on maps of Overijssel from the early 1800s.
