The Lange Voorhout, named because it was an extension (fore-wood or fore-forest) of the The Hague Forest, gradually took on its characteristic L-shape.
The first buildings on the Lange Voorhout appeared around the beginning of the 15th century. The current Kloosterkerk dates from that time, one of the few remnants of the monastery that was built then.
In the Golden Age, the Voorhout was the meeting place of the Hague's 'beau monde', where people would stroll. On the recommendation of Prince Maurits, an attempt was made to create a moat from the Lange Voorhout. This failed because the Lange Voorhout is partly located on a sand hill.
