Description

Merwede is the name for the lower reaches of the Waal. The Merwede Bridge is a fixed road bridge over the Boven-Merwede between Gorinchem and Sleeuwijk. It is a double arch bridge that is unique in the Netherlands. The bridge is known from the traffic jams as "Merwedebrug" or "Brug bij Gorinchem". The main causes of the traffic jams are the only 2-metre-wide left lane on the bridge (normal is 3.5 metres) and the convergence of the A15 and A27 at the Gorinchem junction, just before the bridge.
