De Laak is a body of water in Azewijn, a church village in the municipality of Montferland. It is believed to be a remnant of one of the tributaries of the Rhine, which used to run here. De Laak is known because in 1605 the witch Mechteld ten Ham was thrown into the water to prove that she was a witch. She floated on her wide skirts, which counted as proof. She was then burned at the stake in 's-Heerenberg.
