In the 2nd half of the 9th century, documents first mention the Land of Arkel.
During the 13th century, lords of Arkel took part in several Crusades to liberate the Holy Land.
The imposing castle of the Lords of Arkel stood on the eastern bank of the city of Gorinchem. This castle was demolished in 1413.
