The drifting sand area of the De Loonse and Drunense Duinen was created in the late Middle Ages. It consists of a higher, somewhat rough and sandy mid-range with a slightly more fertile, but still sparse edge around it. Until the late Middle Ages, the area was able to feed modest farming communities, but in that period of relative prosperity the population pressure increased to such an extent that the cycle in the area was fatally disrupted by overgrazing and too often sodging of the heath and an ever-expanding wasteland was created.
