Delfshaven is an administrative district of the municipality of Rotterdam. In 2019, Delfshaven had 76,215 inhabitants and an area of 5.80 km². Originally, Delfshaven was part of Delft. In 1795, it became an independent municipality, only to be annexed by Rotterdam in 1886.
Delfshaven was established in 1389, when the Delfshavense Schie was dug to provide the city of Delft with a connection to the Maas. Since then, vessels from Delft could reach the Nieuwe Maas via the Delftse and Delfshavense Schie. Around the lock, the port town 'Delfshaven' emerged. It had the status of a 'colony of Delft'. A setback in growth occurred when, at the end of the Hoekse and Kabeljauwse conflicts (around 1490), the Hoeken caused enormous destruction. In the early sixteenth century, Delfshaven had just over 100 houses and 400 inhabitants.
