The Veenpark is a Dutch open-air museum near the village of Barger-Compascuum in the municipality of Emmen.
The museum originated in 1966. The peat colony Barger-Compascuum had existed for a hundred years that year. To celebrate this, an open-air exhibition was organized, featuring several old peat cottages, known as 'plaggenhutten'. This laid the foundation for the later open-air museum, which now covers 160 hectares, making it the largest open-air museum in the Netherlands. The open-air exhibition had a attracting effect: old tools and implements were donated to the museum. Additionally, the number of old houses could be increased, partly thanks to support from the national government.
