When the land was split between the State and the Erfgooiers in 1836, large plots were owned by private individuals. The new owners planted trees because wood gave more yield from the soil. This is how many forests were created in the Gooi, including Spanderswoud. In the Spanderswoud there are still erratic water features, created by the excavation of sand.
