Lors de la division des terres entre l'Empire et les Erfgooiers en 1836, de grandes parcelles furent mises en propriété privée. Les nouveaux propriétaires ont planté des arbres car le bois offrait un meilleur rendement de la terre. Ainsi, de nombreuses forêts se sont formées dans le Gooi, notamment le Spanderswoud. Dans le Spanderswoud, il y a encore des zones d'eau aux contours irréguliers, créées par l'extraction de sable.
