Bij de splitsing van de grond tussen het Rijk en de Erfgooiers in 1836 kwamen grote percelen in eigendom van particulieren. De nieuwe eigenaren plantten bomen omdat hout meer opbrengst gaf van de grond. Zo ontstonden vele bossen in het Gooi, zo ook Spanderswoud. In het Spanderswoud liggen nog grillig verlopende waterpartijen, ontstaan door het afgraven van zand.
