A chapel was built on the slope of the Tankenberg in 1948 out of gratitude that Oldenzaal survived the war years almost unscathed, also as a memorial to three Oldenzalers who died during war actions. The land on which the chapel is built has been made available by textile manufacturer Gelderman. The chapel was built of Bentheimer sandstone and was consecrated on 29 August 1948 by Dean I.H. van de Berg. On the memorial stone on the right side of the outer wall are the names of J.H. Engelbertink, killed on the Grebbeberg on 13 May 1940, Mr. Joan Gelderman, resistance fighter executed on 4 September 1944 in camp Vught and G.J.H. Wolbers, member of the resistance, who was shot dead by fleeing Germans on 2 April 1945.
