Kranenburg is a small village in the municipality of Bronckhorst along the road between Vorden and Ruurlo in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Kranenburg is part of the Achterhoek region and has over 200 inhabitants.
Until the late Middle Ages, this part of the Achterhoek was a marshy area. People sought out the higher, drier areas to settle. These settlements were often named after animal species that occurred on these 'hills'. On a hill slightly south of present-day Kranenburg, cranes nested. For that reason, the farm established here was called 'De Kranenbarg'.
