More than 150-thousand years ago, during the penultimate ice age, large stones (including igneous rocks) from Scandinavia ended up in this area. During the excavation of the Zanderij Maarn, many stones were found and later brought together on the Stray Stone Island in the middle of the lake. The photo clearly shows that the different types of stones are arranged around the high-voltage pylon like a compass rose. Because of its unique collection, the province of Utrecht has designated the Zwerfsteeneiland Maarn as a geologic monument. The Stray Stone Island can only be visited with a guide.
