The Gooise heath is full of pits that were created by gravel excavation. The residents of the area derived income from the excavation of the ridge for a long time, well into the twentieth century and even during the time of the Goois Nature Reserve, which was established in 1932. Sand and gravel were materials used for construction. In particular, many of these gravel pits are still visible on the Westerheide near the St. Janskerkhof.
