The farmhouse is a square farm with a pyramid-shaped roof. Under this roof there was room for the peasant family, cattle, hay, wagons and other tools.
The development of the bell jar was based on the hay bag. Heavy oak beams, the so-called supports, were placed on the four corners of this. The supporters were connected at the top. On this square construction of wooden beams rests the large roof. The side walls (initially made of potted planks, later also of stone) were not or hardly load-bearing.
The space around the hay bag was used as a living area, stable, wagon shed and tool shed.
The roof is made of thatch, sometimes with artfully carved patterns. Reed has a relatively smooth surface, which makes it stormproof and reed is waterproof, although it washes out.
