NATURE RESERVE UTOPIA
On the eastern side of Texel lies Utopia, a beautiful, inner-dyke bird area. Here, large terns and waders breed on the shell beaches. From the Wadden Sea dike, you can get a good view of the birds in the creek area.
During spring or storm tides, the birds flee from the salt marshes of De Schorren and the Wadden Sea to a safe place behind the dike. In Utopia, they can calmly wait until the salt marshes and tidal flats are dry again. Due to rising sea levels, these escape areas are very much needed. Natuurmonumenten transformed the grassland into a creek area with mud edges and many shell banks in 2010 and 2011.
