Between 2005 and 2020, the number of sheep on Texel decreased from 17,000 to 12,000. The wool price is too low, and meat production faces competition from New Zealand and the former Eastern Bloc. Land prices are lower there, and the herds are larger, allowing for cheaper production. Also, environmental legislation requiring farmers who produced too much manure to reduce their livestock had a negative impact on the sheep population on the island. Many farmers kept sheep alongside their cows, which was beneficial because sheep eat what cows leave behind. When the number of animals per hectare was capped, sheep had to give way because they yielded less than cows. Farmers who still have sheep nowadays all do something extra to stay afloat, or as the farmer puts it: 'Sheep money is quickly counted.'
