In Oudenbosch there is a large domed church, which many marvel at. The amazement is because of the size of the church and because of the Roman-like shape. It is the Basilica of Saints Agatha and Barbara built between 1865 and 1892.
In 1912 the church was elevated to basilica minor (small basilica). A basilica minor is an honorary title for a Roman Catholic church building of exceptional significance. It is usually a special sanctuary, chosen because of its historical significance or because of the fact that the church is a place of pilgrimage. Churches with this honorary title are called basilicas.
The design of the domed church in Oudenbosch is inspired by two Roman churches. The dome of the basilica is a (reduced) copy of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica and the façade is a copy of the façade of the Arch basilica of St. John Lateran.
