The construction of the current Bonifatius Church started in 1404. The church and the tower were completed in the course of the 15th century.
In the 16th century, the church burned down twice, sparing the tower both times. The church that was built during the reconstruction in 1555 is the church as it still stands today. It is a late Gothic hall church with two wide naves and a narrow south aisle that lies under one roof with the middle aisle.
The tilt of the tower may have been caused by the reclamation of the Wieringermeer, which has changed the groundwater level. In any case, it is certain that the tower has been tilting an average of 3 mm per year in a northeasterly direction for the last 30 years.
