The three ferries across the Bergse Maas (Drongelse Veer, Capelse Veer and Bernse Veer) were free for all traffic until February 2024. That had been the government's concession to the population along the Bergse Maas more than a century earlier. This artificial river - actually a canal - was put into use in 1904 to move the mouth of the Maas from Woudrichem to Lage Zwaluwe. This put an end to the recurring flooding around the Merwede.
However, since February 2024, the free service for motorized traffic is over. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be ferried for free.
