Pure and rural enjoyment at De Baeckermat

It all started with that first potato sold in the small shop in the farm shed of the Baecke family. Two generations later, potatoes from their own soil are still being sold in the farm shop and served in the restaurant of De Baeckermat in Westdorpe. Sisters Esther and Judith Baecke grew up on the arable farm and are continually strengthening the farm-to-table story within the agricultural branch, the restaurant, and the farm shop. “We always feel connected to the region, nature, and the seasons. Our mission is to enjoy PURE and rural products from the region in all seasons. That’s why we work with fresh regional products in our kitchen, and you’ll see many regional flavors in our restaurant and the farm shop.”

The name Baeckermat refers to the family name, but not only that; 'bakermat' means 'origin'. The name also references the origin of the business. It all started with that potato, and it certainly hasn’t ended there. Innovative thinking is evident in all three branches. This is illustrated by the new cultivation of elephant grass alongside the potatoes, creating a sustainable delicious and fair environment for the restaurant and farm shop, and increasingly emphasizing the short supply chain. The restaurant complements the farm shop. What’s on the menu is also offered in the shop. Beef, eggs, cheese and artisanal croquettes from the region, Boerenhoeve ice cream, and regional beers, for example. Even dishes from their own kitchen are available in the farm shop: a stew made from regional beef, homemade soups, and traditional Westdorpe pie. Additionally, you will find seasonal products such as asparagus, strawberries, fresh mussels off the boat, organic vegetables, and farm dairy. “Straight from the grower to the customer.” Looking for a nice gift? In the farm shop, you have plenty of choices from beautiful gift baskets filled with regional products, jam, juice, herbs, wine, Zeeland souvenirs, you name it, all from the local area. Even the greeting cards are made by an illustrator from the local town. For those wanting to take something sweet, there’s a nut bar and chocolate. There’s actually just too much to mention. One thing is clear: cooperation with local entrepreneurs is a priority. “We find it important to create a healthier and economically viable environment together. The restaurant and the terrace in the summer are filled with cheerful visitors every day. Hikers and cyclists love to stop by. Interestingly, you can charge your electric bike sustainably at the Sunovera e-bike charging station in the parking lot. De Baeckermat welcomes not only individual guests but also groups, both private and business. Because the restaurant has two separate dining areas in addition to the main room, it is perfect for a family celebration or a business conference.
